Rediscovering the Soul of Travel in Catarman, Northern Samar

What does it feel like to stumble into a place so untouched, so soulful, and so rich with stories that it forever shifts how you view the world?

For me, that moment came in Northern Samar — specifically in the beautiful and quiet municipality of Catarman. Thanks to the newly launched direct flights from Cebu to Catarman by Philippine Airlines (every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday), this hidden gem is now within easier reach — and trust me, it’s worth every mile.

Day 1: Where Wonder Begins – Biri Island

From the moment I landed, the warmth of Northern Samar was palpable. Led by the ever-welcoming Miss Josette Doctor and her team from the Regional Department of Tourism, we kicked off the trip with a courtesy call in San Rosario followed by a hearty lunch at La Mezza Grill in San Isidro. The native chicken tinola? Comforting and rich — just like the culture I was about to explore.

The real magic started after a van ride to Lavizares Port and a ₱140 boat trip to Biri Island — the crown jewel of Northern Samar.

🌊 Biri Island: The Island of Rock Giants and Gentle Souls

Upon arrival, the island greeted me with ocean air and kind smiles. I checked into the homey Ahmara Traveller’s Inn and took a short walk to a local footbridge connecting two barangays — a quiet but powerful symbol of unity.

But it’s the Legendary 7 Rock Formations of Biri that truly stopped me in my tracks:

  • Magasang – Massive and mysterious

  • Magsapad – Wide, flat, and cinematic

  • Makadlaw – Where sunrise and waves collide in a soul-stirring dance

  • Puhunan – Said to guard golden treasure

  • Caranas – Simple, bamboo-named and strong

  • Hinablan – Textured like woven sea threads

  • Makabog – Echoing with caves and ancient whispers

At sunset in Busay Hills, I watched the sky melt into golds and pinks, then ended the day with a seafood feast hosted by Mayor Amy Delos Reyes — crabs, fresh fish, and ocean-kissed shell dishes. An experience that tasted like home.

Day 2: Footprints in Sand, Echoes of Strength

My second day brought me to Lalalagun Eco-Resort, a community-run initiative with big dreams — that every local family can send at least one child to college. It’s not just a resort, but a movement.

A 1-kilometer scenic walk led to a reception area nestled in mangroves, where the community welcomed us with a traditional feast and kind hearts. After a climb up 239 steps, I reached the resort’s teepee-style accommodations perched on a hill with panoramic views.

And just when I thought I had seen it all, Royal Palm Hotel appeared — a luxe surprise in the heart of rural Samar, built by a Filipino from Dubai who believes in his hometown’s future.

Later, I explored Palapag through a historical walking tour: from the Lumang Simbahan and Agustin Sumuroy Monument to stories of the mystical Biringan City — an enchanted city said to be hidden in plain sight.

Day 3: White Sands and Botanical Bliss

My final day began with breakfast at Marcella’s Resort, followed by a dreamy boat ride to Canawayon Island. Think powdery white sands, crystal-clear water, and huts perfect for staying off-grid.

Back at Marcella’s Inn, their famous cheesy pizza was a surprise hit — a slice of comfort before I drifted into nature at Lia’s Botanical Garden. With wide trails, vibrant flora, and peaceful air, it was a garden not just of plants, but of the soul.

Before heading home, I stopped by Pinusilan Lagoon, where still waters mirrored the calm and clarity I felt — the kind only places like Northern Samar can give.
